Punch Bowl, Cocktails and Cigarettes
This is a punch bowl. It was made by Cowan Pottery Studio. It is dated 1931. Its medium is glazed earthenware with engobe, sgraffito.
Two designs by Cleveland industrial designer Viktor Schreckengost from around 1930 for Cowan Pottery, the "Cocktails and Cigarettes" (left) and "The New Yorker (Jazz)" punch bowls, reflect the Jazz Age obsession for nightlife and the urban experience. While “The New Yorker” was made in a limited edition, this is the only known example of “Cocktails and Cigarettes,” a related nightclub theme.
It is credited Lent by The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Elizabeth Mather McMillan, 2000.128.
