C-shaped arcs, four white and three black, alternating in color and connected, formed a singular bench object in a nature-inspired shape reminscent of a winding river or a snake. Each of the symmetrical pieces appear designed to interlock by sliding together at the end points. The benches are made with polystyrene -- a polymer which is expanded to make styrofoam -- and coated with polyurethane, lending a slightly glossy finish and appearance. Installed on the Arthur Ross Terrance and Garden's grassy lawn, the moveable components resulted in the object being photographed from different placements and angles. A total of 11 images are currently available (https://collection.cooperhewitt.org/objects/874352887/images/).Visitors were allowed to sit on the undulating bench while reading, chatting, and people-watching. The object's name was a playful reference and homage to Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx's Copacabana Beach promenade situated along the palm tree-lined Avenida Atlântica in Rio de Janeiro. Burle Marx was recognized as a pioneer who introduced modernist aesthetics, marked by abstract shapes, symmetry, and bold colors. Walter Hood is the creative director and founder of Hood Design Studio in Oakland, California and a professor of architecture at the University of California, Berkeley. A 2009 recipient of the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award for Landscape Design, he was also head architect of the garden’s redesign in 2015. Additionally, he was selected as a MacArthur Fellow -- a 'genius grant' recipient -- in 2019.
