Teesside Power Station (not Yet Realized)
This is a Teesside Power Station (not yet realized). It was designed by Heatherwick Studio and Thomas Heatherwick. It is dated 2009.
Can the regeneration of a post-industrial area be driven by a new power station rather than a new art gallery?
This biomass power station on the Tees River will serve 2,000 new homes, but the studio wondered whether it might also have a cultural function. Many magnificent early power stations celebrated the civic importance of electricity; those built today are banal at best. This design houses equipment in a single, elegant structure, while noise-dampening planted slopes create a park. The studio envisions the building as a museum of power as well as a public venue, with multipurpose spaces for community events. Granted planning permission, the proposal awaits development.
