Otaared, from Wanderers collection
This is a Otaared. It was designed by Neri Oxman, Dominik Kolb, MIT Media Lab Mediated Matter Group, Christoph Bader and Deskriptiv and produced by Stratasys.
This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Stratasys as part of Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial.
Architect and designer Neri Oxman founded MIT Media Lab’s Mediated Matter group in 2010. The work of Oxman and her group combines computation, robotics, materials engineering, and synthetic biology. Wanderers, An Astrobiological Exploration, created in 2014 with Stratasys, is a series of 3D-printed, wearable organ systems. The antler-like protrusions of Otaared are designed to protect the body. In principle, the ruffled extrusions would grow on their own from calcifying bacteria seeded in a printed shell, becoming a synthetic exoskeleton.
