Pangea Dress, from Spring / Summer 2015 Ready-to-Wear collection

This is a Pangea dress. It was designed by Mary Katrantzou.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Mary Katrantzou as part of Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial.

It is dated 2014. Its medium is nylon tulle, polyethylene, polyurethane, cotton, polyester, pvc, silk.

Katrantzou combines modernist attention to shape and structure with traditional materials and techniques—tulle and beading—to create the stunning Pangea dress. The opaque, intricately beaded structure is cut away to reveal the sheer, translucent draping of floor-length tulle. The pale, shimmery palette is accented with bright orange beaded and textured fabric. The optical effect created by this deft use of material and form is one of opulence and sophistication.
