Textile, Foliage
This is a Textile. It was designed by Hella Jongerius and co-designed by Maharam Design Studio and produced by Maharam. It is dated 2014 and we acquired it in 2018. Its medium is 75% polyester, 25% cotton and its technique is jacquard woven. It is a part of the Textiles department.
For her fiftieth birthday, Jongerius traveled to Uganda, where she was struck by the diversity of foliage she encountered. She collected leaves of varied shapes and, after returning home, began to carve rubber stamps of their forms. In Foliage, the silhouetted leaves are arranged as one might see specimens in a plant press or photogram. The weaving is used to draw attention to the delicate variations in veining and surface quality of the leaves -- botanical that focuses as much on the texture as on the silhouette of the leaves.
