Textile, Eden
This is a Textile. It was designed by Hella Jongerius and co-designed by Maharam Design Studio and produced by Maharam. It is dated 2014 and we acquired it in 2018. Its medium is 83% polyester, 17% cotton and its technique is jacquard woven. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Since Indian chintz first found its way to Europe in the 17th century, botanical designs have been a staple of interiors fabrics. Eden is a botanical that bridges the historical and the contemporary. Fantastical floral forms are silhouetted in an airy composition. A densely woven jacquard construction is used to accentuate the abstracted forms and emphasize contours in much the same way that a background damask and metallic brocade were used in the 18th century to give the illusion of shadow and light. Jongerius’s signature color combinations, here apricot and lime green against a dusky blue ground, reinforce the feeling of an 18th-century chinoiserie silk with a modern twist.
