Textile, Strié
This is a Textile. It was designed by D.D. Tillett and Leslie Tillett. It is dated 1950–1959 and we acquired it in 2015. Its medium is tussah silk and its technique is hand-pulled strié, ink applied with drag box tool, on plain weave with slubs. It is a part of the Textiles department.
This classic seafoam green strié is created with a special drag box with notches filed into the front lip. The surface was covered by hand-pulling stripes, with a very slight overlap, starting from the outer selvedges and working towards the center. The last stripe would be laid down by taping off the drag box at the width of the last opening left in the center of the fabric. The irregularity of the hand-applied ink combined with the slubbed silk gives a pleasing texture. The use of such a laborious process to create a 'solid' or neutral fabric shows the value their clients put on the subtle complexity of the Tilletts' prints.
