Textile, Brushstrokes
This is a Textile. It was designed by D.D. Tillett and Leslie Tillett. It is dated 1975–1979 and we acquired it in 2015. Its medium is cotton and its technique is screen printed on plain weave, hand-pulled. It is a part of the Textiles department.
The nonchalance of Brushstrokes belies the multi-layered process by which it is created. The loose, random brushstrokes are printed in opaque white on a white ground. Then, the entire surface is covered with shocking yellow, hand-applied with the drag-box. The transparency of the yellow ink reveals the heightened opacity of the printed white pigment, giving a tone-on-tone effect.
