Textile, Giant Leaf

This is a Textile. It was designed by D.D. Tillett and Leslie Tillett. It is dated 1970–1979 and we acquired it in 2015. Its medium is cotton and its technique is hand-pulled stripe, screen printed, on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

In its scale, Giant Leaf calls to mind another screen-print company working in the 1970s—Marimekko. But while Marimekko’s designs used a bold, flat graphic style, drawing was central to the Tilletts’ work. The naturalistic treatment of the leaves and broken, graphite-like quality of the black outlining conveys a strong sense of the artist’s hand.

This object was donated by Seth Tillett and Nicole Rauscher. It is credited Gift of Seth Tillett and Nicole Rauscher.

Its dimensions are

H x W: 247.4 × 126.4 cm (97 3/8 × 49 3/4 in.)
