Botanica VI (Nepenthes Villosa) Vase
This is a vase. It was designed by Formafantasma, Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin. It is dated 2011 and we acquired it in 2015. Its medium is dewaxed shellac, bois durci (sycamore wood and egg albumen), beeswax, leather, glass, ink on paper. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Intrigued by our dependence on modern environmentally harmful plastics, the designers of Studio Formafantasma were inspired to investigate historic polymers. This vase, part of the Botanica series of vessels made of early, pre-synthetic plastic materials, includes substances use in the 18th and 19th centuries: beeswax, shellac, (a resin derived from insects), and bois durci (sawdust mixed with blood albumen, then molded).
It is credited Museum purchase from General Acquisitions Endowment Fund.
