This is a book illustration. It was written by James Stuart and Nicholas Revett and printed by T. Bensley. It is dated 1816. Its medium is engraving on paper. It is a part of the Smithsonian Libraries department.

The Antiqvities of Athens demonstrates British neoclassicism’s celebration of both the aesthetic and technical aspects of architecture. This engraving is followed by technical drawings as well as scenes from daily life—in this case, a depiction of washing clothes reminiscent of designs on ancient Greek pottery. The Antiqvities of Athens reached a wide audience of amateurs and professionals and presented unique material: while similar studies had been completed of Rome's ruins, none previously had been undertaken of Greece due to Britain's fraught political relationships with the Ottoman Empire.
