Dresser’s forward-thinking designs realized the potential for unity between machine manufacture and artful design. In contrast to the champions of the Arts and Crafts movement, Dresser was one of the first true practitioners of industrial design. Although he was primarily concerned with functionality, he also paid close attention to how design makes us feel. The confluence of emotion and presentation is at the core of interior decorating, especially for objects designed for the home—the most private space we put on display.
