This is a book illustration. It was architect: Bury and published by Bance aine. It is dated 1825. Its medium is engraving on paper. It is a part of the Smithsonian Libraries department.
By the early–mid 19th century, true French joinery was active primarily in smaller towns like St. Gilles. This engraving shows different elevations of the “Screw of St. Gilles,” a staircase in the pilgrimage town’s famous abbey. In his description of the staircase, Bury notes its low profile and elegantly cantilevered steps—highlighting the intersection of form and function.
It is credited Collection of Smithsonian Institution Libraries.
