Wine Rinser (England)
This is a Wine rinser. It is dated 18th century and we acquired it in 1968. Its medium is cut and engraved glass. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
In order to clean and chill glasses in between drinks, wine rinsing tubs were kept either on the tabletop or, more often, on a sideboard adjacent to the dining table. At lavish meals in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, a different wine would be served with each course, meaning the wine glasses would need to be rinsed frequently to avoid mixing flavors.
