This is a Brooch. It was designed by Thomas Gentille. It is dated early 21st century and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is aluminum. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Gentile approaches jewelry design from the perspective that brooches are the ideal type of jewelry because they are flexible--that function need not interfere with appearance. His brooches are at once sculptural and geometric, emphasizing the medium and his background in sculpture. This brooch, with its simple abstract geometry recalls the artists of mid-century Minimalism.
