Medellín Metrocable and Northeast Integral Urban Project
This is a Project. It is dated 2003–2009.
Medellín, Colombia, consists of a formal, consolidated city built along a river valley and a densely populated informal city on the surrounding hillsides. By connecting marginalized parts of the city to its safer, more established areas through elevated cable cars, Medellín’s government has transformed it into an inclusive metropolis. Integral Urban Projects (Proyectos Urbanos Integrales, or PUI) focused the city’s resources on locations marked by poverty and social unrest, providing the best public buildings and transportation system for the poorest parts of the city. Barrio centers were redefined with the location of the cable pylons, and new pedestrian walkways unite neighborhoods previously ruled by rival gangs. There is now a greater sense of participation, and residents from the rest of the city visit Santa Domingo and other reclaimed neighborhoods.
