City Digits: Local Lotto

This is a Project. It was designed by Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Civic Data Design Lab and Center for Urban Pedagogy and collaborator: New York City Department of Education teachers and students. It is dated 2012–15.

Brooklyn College math professor Laurie Rubel collaborated with Sarah Williams from MIT’s Civic Data Design Lab to design the City Digits project to help high school students learn math by examining urban injustices in their own New York City neighborhood. Students collect field data on who plays the lottery; record and share local stories about the lotto on an online map; visualize and analyze lottery spending patterns around the city; and use the mathematics of probability to think critically about the lottery.
