Salt Shaker And Stopper
This is a Salt Shaker and Stopper. It was designed by William E. Lescaze and manufactured by Revere Copper and Brass Company. It is dated ca. 1935 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is rolled and pierced stainless steel. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Lescaze emigrated to the United States in 1920 and established his architectural practice in NYC in 1923. By 1935, when these shakers were made, Lescaze had already been designing modernist housewares and furnishings. These shakers demonstrate Lescaze’s modernist aesthetic, in addition to his novel use of stainless steel for tableware. The simple form of the shakers reflects Lescaze’s architecture in miniature, while demonstrating his vision for not only buildings, but for their contents as well.
