Algol 11 Television
This is a television. It was designed by Marco Zanuso and Richard Sapper and manufactured by Brionvega, S.p.A.. It is dated 1964 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is molded plastic, perspex, chromium-plated metal. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
The Algol 11 television of 1964 combines portability with the elegant styling that became a hallmark of Sapper and Zanuso collaborations. The body was extremely small, and a gentle upward curve of the screen toward the viewer created a lightness that belied its compact and solid construction. A handle popped out of the case for ease of carrying, and as in several other electronic devices by these designers, the controls and buttons were integrated within the surface, emphasizing the clean lines and imparting a sculptural quality to the form.
