Landscape architect Walter Hood was commissioned by Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum to re-design the garden of the Carnegie Mansion. Hood drew inspiration from the garden’s close proximity to Central Park and the historic nature of the mansion (including Richard Schermerhorn, Jr.’s unbuilt 1901 design plans for the garden) to create a contemporary verdant setting for all to enjoy. Hood worked with RAFT Landscape Architecture to design new pavers for the Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden, and conceived of new plantings and a reimagined rock garden (rockery) to provide a new landscape experience for the museum. These atmospheric watercolor and charcoal drawings from Hood’s sketchbook illustrate the early considerations and inspirations of the proximity of Central Park. They include elements that were considered but abandoned in the final design, such as a vertical garden and a water element.
