Handaxe #5 And Blade #9, BC–AD Contemporary Flint Tool Design Series
This is a Handaxe #5 and Blade #9. It was designed by Dov Ganchrow and Ami Drach.
This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Studio Amidov as part of Tools: Extending Our Reach.
Drach and Ganchrow reimagine man’s oldest (and perhaps most popular) designed object for the 21st-century with these stone tools from the team’s BC-AD series. Made from flint sourced in Israel’s Negev desert, each blade is hand-knapped using a softer stone—though traditionally, bone or antler could have also been used to hone the sharp blade. In a contemporary twist, these tools are then dipped in yellow latex, pointing to the designated ‘hand-contact’ area and recalling objects from a modern-day toolbox, including electric drills and plier grips. Other objects in the series include stone blades with custom-fitted 3D-printed handles, combining man’s oldest and newest technologies into one truly unique set of tools.
