Textile, Drag Box Plaid
This is a Textile. It was designed by D.D. Tillett and Leslie Tillett. It is dated 1960–1969 and we acquired it in 2015. Its medium is cotton and its technique is hand-pulled stripes applied with drag box on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.
This fabric is a drag-box tour de force. Hand-pulled stripes of red, pink, orange, yellow, teal and blue are overprinted with an activated plaid of straight and curving lines, also hand-pulled, in emerald green and navy. The drag box was a tool originally invented by Leslie Tillett’s father, George; an acrylic box holds the ink, which is released through a narrow slot at one end. The printer has total control over the amount of ink released and the quality of the lines he draws with the box.
