Columned Structure Architectural Model
This is a architectural model. It is dated 1993 and we acquired it in 2013. Its medium is carved, turned, and veneered pear, walnut, satinwood, and other woods. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
David Armstrong-Jones, Viscount Linley, known professionally as David Linley, is one of Britain’s best known furniture maker-designers. He specializes in high quality and sophisticated combinations of materials in furniture and other designs that reference history but are firmly rooted in the contemporary. A skilled practitioner of inlay and of architectural design as applied to decorative art objects, he caters to collectors of many periods. While the launch of his career in 1985 may have been facilitated through his family’s prominence—his parents are Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon—Linley was quick to make his own mark and establish an influential practice through his top level designs and execution.
This model, one of a group of models proposed for acquisition, reflects architectural liveliness grounded in highly refined turning and carving techniques. Models are an important part of the design process, and demonstrate craftsmanship, skill of execution, and the innovative use of materials. The group under consideration would provide the museum with an opportunity to examine the role of the model in many contexts.
