Textile, Doily

This is a Textile. It was designed by Nick Cave and manufactured by Knoll Textiles. It is dated 2022 and we acquired it in 2024. Its medium is 80% polyester, 20% cotton. It is a part of the department.

Nick Cave is perhaps best known for his Soundsuits, elaborate sculptural forms that are worn and performed by dancers. He builds depth and dimension in these works by layering, arranging, and transforming everyday, found objects through intensive and laborious handwork. In creating Doily, KnollTextiles adopted his maximalist approach to building up the surface by employing two types of hand-guided embroidery techniques layered over a woven ground featuring a different pattern. The result is a swirl of texture and line that animate the doily patterns.

This object was donated by Knoll Textiles. It is credited Gift of Knoll Textiles.

Its dimensions are

H x W: 276.9 × 135.9 cm (109 × 53 1/2 in.)
