Sidewall, Zwarte Piet Delft Tile
This is a sidewall. It was designed by Sheila Bridges and manufactured by Sheila Bridges Home. It is dated 2021 and we acquired it in 2021. Its medium is digital print on paper. It is a part of the department.
This wallpaper by interior designer Sheila Bridges interrogates the past by artfully reimagining the traditional master-and-servant relationship between Sinterklass, the Dutch version of St. Nicholas, and his Black helper, Zwarte Piet (Black Pete). Over the course of the repeat, modeled after classic Dutch blue-and-white ceramic tiles, Zwarte Piet is transformed from an obedient sidekick to a free agent, with Sinterklaas ultimately bagged up in the empty toy sack, like one of the naughty children he and Piet would take back to their home base of Spain.
