Folding Knife (Part of Traveling Cutlery Set) Knife
This is a knife. It is dated ca. 1790–1800 and we acquired it in 1985. Its medium is steel, silver, gold. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
This matching set is decorated with "Souvenir de Carlsbad" for the international clientele going to the spas there to use and take home. It represents an early example of what later became a major industry, the production of spoons with scenes or emblems of the place visited, like those for Rhode Island and the Brooklyn Bridge ("Feeding Desire: Design and the Tools of the Table, 1500 - 2005," May - August 13, 2006).
