Drawing, Architectural project for the house of P.J. Hetzel, 1874
This is a Drawing. It was created by Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc. It is dated 1874 and we acquired it in 1984. Its medium is watercolor, graphite, pen and black ink. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
The two projects were executed by Viollet-Le-Duc-for his friend publisher P.J. Hetzel who had purchased a small house in the country and commissioned Viollet-le-Duc to design additions to it. The final design which was executed incorporates ideas from both these drawings. The house still exists in Bellevue which is near Paris.
These drawings also are propozed to fill the large gap, in the drawings collection of late nineteenth century architectural drawings. As Viollet-le-Duc was an enonlously influential and important figure of his time it seems extremely appropriate to me to add these examples of his work.
Its dimensions are
H x W: 24.9 × 43.6 cm (9 13/16 × 17 3/16 in.)
It is signed
Signed and dated in pen and black ink at lower left: "Oct. 1874 E Viollet le Duc"
It is inscribed
Inscribed at lower left: "Elevation sur AB" Inscribed at lower right: "Elevation sur CD" Inscribed at lower center: "Maison de Campagne à Bellevue"
