Brooch And Earrings (France)
This is a Brooch and earrings. It was jeweler: Eugene Fontenay. It is dated ca. 1870 and we acquired it in 1983. Its medium is gold. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Fontenay, a French jeweler of major importance during the second half of the nineteenth century, created some of the finest pieces of the time and wrote a landmark history of jewelery after his retirement. Active in Paris from 1848 to 1882, Fontenay was most well-known for his gold jewelry in the Etruscan or Antique style, featuring granulation and applied wirework. He provided jewels for the Empress Eugenie of France, as well as for many other monarchs. (Jewelry 1989-90).
