Drawing, Study of the ruins of the Temple of Olympian Zeus
This is a Drawing. It was created by Lockwood de Forest. It is dated January 24, 1878 and we acquired it in 2013. Its medium is brush and oil paint on thin paperboard, mounted on very thick paperboard. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
In the winter of 1877–78, Lockwood de Forest returned to Greece and Egypt. It was during this trip that he painted this study of columns. This little landscape shows de Forest’s appreciation of ancient ruins, which was inspired by Frederic Edwin Church’s teachings as well as Church’s sketches of Greek and Roman sites. The work also shows de Forest’s hand becoming looser and somewhat more tonal, which is characteristic of his personal style.
