Knife (Netherlands), ca. 1618
This is a knife. It is dated ca. 1618 and we acquired it in 1962. Its medium is silver, steel, gilding. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
text from "Sexual Politics of Cutlery" in Feeding Desire exhibition catalogue:
" And exemplary pair (fig. 9), engraved, "*Johanna*Bouwens*1618*" along the handles, is also embellished with edifying scnes, including Suzannah and the Elders, and mythological figures such as Ceres and Bacchus, symbols of fertility and joy. A slightly later design (see Coffin, fig. 10) includes a Biblical exhortation for wives to submit to their husbands."
