Hanging, Digit Maps: Four Centimeters
This is a Hanging. It was designed by Lia Cook. It is dated 2005 and we acquired it in 2007. Its medium is cotton and its technique is two intercrossed plain weave structures (double cloth), hand woven using digitally controlled jacquard head. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Lia Cook’s creative process combines photographic media and computer-aided technologies with a mastery of hand and powered Jacquard looms. Her recent black-and-white work is based on scanned photographs, which are manipulated on a computer. Digital technology enables her to play with scale, detail, and focus. The visual information is translated with a CAD program into weaving instructions for a digital Jacquard head on a hand loom in her studio.
The interaction between the binary coding and the physicality of the weaving leaves a distinctive surface pattern or trace, which Cook examines in Digit Maps: Four Centimeters. Here, she enlarges and re-weaves one small detail, which in turn expresses the labyrinthine surface pattern.
Digit Maps: Four Centimeters, together with two other pieces by Cook, Face Maps: Halfseen and Binary Traces: Kay, are being considered for acquisition as a group, due to their complex interplay of detail, pattern, and process.
