Dome-shaped Architectural Staircase Model
This is a Architectural Staircase Model. It is dated mid-19th century and we acquired it in 2014. Its medium is walnut and beechwood. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
No. 25
Dome-shaped model with double staircase
Europe, probably France, mid-19th century
Walnut, beechwood
Promised gift of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene V. Thaw
This masterwork combines impressive architectural and staircase execution with refined woodworking techniques. Made in the late Renaissance Italian style, its open-dome structure exposes a staircase much like that in no. 20 and in the engraving by Delbrel on the south wall (plate 17). All reflect the nineteenth century’s interest in historic styles.
