Mourning Sampler (USA)
This is a Mourning sampler. It was embroidered by Mrs. A.M. Lamb. It is dated ca. 1810 and we acquired it in 2003. Its medium is silk and its technique is embroidered in satin stitch on plain weave foundation. It is a part of the Textiles department.
The young girl who is mourned in this sampler (and, incidentally, the grandmother of its donor) was named for Amanda Malvina Fitzalan, the main character in the Gothic romance The Children of the Abbey. Written by the Irish novelist Regina Maria Roche (1764 - 1845), the book was first published in 1796, and remained very popular throughout much of the 19th century.
Today Roche is considered a minor author who wrote very much in the shadow of Ann Radcliffe, but the popularity of The Children of the Abbey rivaled Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho. Her popularity is evidenced by the inclusion of two of her novels in the writing of Jane Austen. The Children of the Abbey is mentioned by the romantic Harriet Smith in Emma, and Clermont (1798) is among the gothic novels satirized in Northanger Abbey.
