Print, Film Ribbon

This is a Print. It was graphic design by Paul Rand. It is dated ca. 1959 and we acquired it in 2002. Its medium is offset lithograph on white paperboard. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Graphic designer Paul Rand is perhaps best known for his work on corporate identities. His modern aesthetics are pure in method and execution; the logo for IBM is an excellent example of his simple, yet bold style, infusing bright colors and lively geometric form that made commonplace corporate events seem exciting. For over three decades, Rand created and implemented a comprehensive graphic design program across all of the company’s operations, from the logo to these packages for printer ribbon cartridges. He was a key figure in helping to shape the relationships between graphic design and corporate culture.

It is credited Gift of Marion S. Rand.

Its dimensions are

H x W x D: 10.2 × 23.2 cm (4 in. × 9 1/8 in.)

It is inscribed

Imprinted, lower right quadrant of one side: International Business Machines/ Corporation/ Made and printed in U.S.A.; upper right fold, center: C.W.Z./ 1136447.
