Sidewall (England or United States)

This is a sidewall. It is dated 1880–1900 and we acquired it in 2001. Its medium is machine-printed on ingrain paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

Ingrain paper was patented in the United States in 1877. In this process, the paper is dyed in the pulp stage rather than printing the color on the surface. This roll of paper, found in London, is printed on an unusual rich red ground which makes it an interesting addition to the collection. The chintz-style design was one of hundreds of designs based on textile patterns that were produced in the late 19th century.

This object was donated by Brian Coleman. It is credited Gift of Brian Coleman.

Its dimensions are

22 1/2 inches wide x full roll

It is inscribed

Pattern number 4148 stamped on verso, at end of roll.
