Olympus O-Product Pocket Camera
This is a camera. It is dated 1988 and we acquired it in 1999. Its medium is aluminum, plastic, glass. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
The Olympus O-Product Pocket, a 35mm point and shoot compact camera with a detachable strobe unit, introduced a hard aluminum casing to personal cameras when it launched in 1988. This type of casing eventually became an international standard for hand-held cameras within the consumer market. Issued as a limited edition of 20,000 — 10,000 units were available in Japan and 10,000 were sold overseas — the miniature import was a compact size and the detachable flash made it easily portable. The unique, bold geometric form, circles within a square, is reminiscent of designs from the 1930s.
