This is a Fragment. It is dated 1706–09 and we acquired it in 1999. Its medium is silk and its technique is 4\1 satin damask. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Bizarre silks, produced in Europe for only a short period of time, are distinguished by exotic woven designs that are visually disorienting. These luxurious fabrics were worn by both men and women to indicate their wealth, sophistication, and knowledge of foreign cultures.
It is credited Museum purchase from Eleanor G. Hewitt and Smithsonian Institution Collections Acquisition Program Funds.
