Sidewall (France)
This is a sidewall. It is dated ca. 1810 and we acquired it in 1999. Its medium is block printed on joined sheets. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
An elaborate imitation stone or ashlar block design printed in a cool palette. Ashlar block papers were used in entries and stair halls, and as dado papers in other rooms, to create a stately and solid impression for visitors entering the home. Due to the cold and rigid nature of the printed stone surface these papers were not usually used in rooms where guests were entertained.
