Finger Ring (USA)
This is a Finger ring. It was made by The Kalo Shops. It is dated 1905–14 and we acquired it in 1999. Its medium is wrought gold, baroque pearls. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Kalo was Chicago’s most prominent producer of Arts and Crafts style metalwork and jewelry. The workshop, whose name Kalo is the Greek word for “beauty,” focused on naturalistic forms and ornamentation, exemplified in this ring. The irregular freshwater pearls embody the Arts and Crafts focus on natural, non-machined materials, while the delicately hammered leaves and flowers that frame them show the jeweler’s handicraft.
