Travel Iron (Denmark)
This is a Travel iron. It is dated ca. 1950 and we acquired it in 1998. Its medium is cast metal, molded plastic, fabric (cord). It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
A radical interpretation of streamlined design reduced this tiny travel iron’s compact form to its essential elements: a curved plastic full-width palm grip with grooves for the user’s fingertips, above a thick sole plate with simple horizontal metal cooling “fins.” The overall effect is reminiscent of a ship’s hull and projects a sense of forward motion and speed. Made in Denmark, the Mikro is based on the Smoothie, a travel iron first manufactured in 1946 by Lucas Holder & Co., in England.
It is credited Museum purchase from Eleanor G. Hewitt Fund.
