Cake Server with Japonesque Engraving and Mother-of-pearl Handle Server
This is a server. It was designed by F. Nicoud. It is dated ca. 1890 and we acquired it in 1996. Its medium is gold plated, silver, mother of pearl. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
text from "Manufacturing and Marketing in Europe 1600-2000" in Feeding Desire exhibition catalogue:
"A great variety of tableware was recommended in the 1845 U.S. edition of Thomas Webster's Encyclopedia of Domestic Economy, including fish slices, asparagus tongs, cheese scoops, knife rests, nut crackers, grape scissors, etc. , all items offered in Christofle's catalogue of 1862. (fig. 28)."
"Plated silver objects were somtimes featured together, depending on which material was more appropriate for specific functions, such as a sharp cutting edge or cherry pitter in plate."
It is credited Museum purchase from Smithsonian Institution Collections Acquisition Program, Decorative Arts Association Acquisition, and Sarah Cooper-Hewitt Funds.
