Datebook, Astro Plaid, 1994
This is a Datebook. It was designed by Purgatory Pie Press. It is dated 1994 and we acquired it in 1997. Its medium is letterpress on paper bound with woven ribbon and string. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Three calendars were selected by Ellen Lupton for acquisition consideration because of their relationship to letterpress calendars and letterpress printing already in the collection, most notably the works of Roni Gross, who also comes out of the Center for Book Arts. The 1994 Astro Plaid datebook combines nostalgic, almost "naive" typographical elements with a design-related plaid binding which together produce a unique "precious" object. The Toy Book Cube is a 1995 datebook in the form of a witty puzzle cube that appropriately delights and confuses the user. It also displays an unusual and creative binding system. The letterhead, coasters, and business card were given to Ellen Lupton, who would like to pass them on as a donation to the Department of Drawings, Prints & Graphic Design.
It is credited Museum purchase from General Acquisitions Endowment Fund.
