Chef De Piece (France)

This is a Chef de piece. It was manufactured by Louis Bire et Verdonnet. It is dated 1790–99 and we acquired it in 1994. Its medium is cotton and its technique is block printed on plain weave with blocks for red and black. It is a part of the Textiles department.

This object was donated by Cora Ginsburg. It is credited Gift of Cora Ginsburg.

Its dimensions are

Warp x Weft: 36.2 × 90.2 cm (14 1/4 × 35 1/2 in.)

It has the following markings

Stamp at one end: "Louis Bire & Verdonnet de Bourdeaux. Bon Teint." in square within elongated oval. Also "D.1306",and "N 32" in compartments at either side of the oval. Also "LAC" in black within box and "Comm. N 2" in black. Also faint indication of another mark, "LBV 32". All of these marks are on the front of the piece.
