Chef De Piece (France)
This is a Chef de piece. It was company: Torcat & Long. It is dated 1787–90 and we acquired it in 1994. Its medium is linen warp, cotton weft and its technique is block printed on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Its dimensions are
Warp: 54 cm (21 1/4 in.). Weft: 80 cm (31 1/2 in.) Both selvedges present. Piece seamed together horizontally near the bottom. Pattern: Sophisticated concept for this period of block printing in northern France: the design does not repeat across the width of the fabric but if lengths of fabric were sewn together correctly they would form a half-drop repeat. Height of repeat not present.
It has the following markings
Stamped impression (incomplete) on front of fabric: "...RIQUE DE TORCAT & LONG ...N BON TEINT LAN 2. D.L.R.P" all in black within a frame. At the right side there is a smaller frame at a right angle to the first one "MV". On the back, printed in blue-gray, " 6659BM22" and handwritten in fading black ink, "1229".
