Drawing, Design for a Grand Légumier (Vegetable Dish)
This is a Drawing. It is dated ca. 1921 and we acquired it in 1992. Its medium is graphite, blue color pencil on wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
The Compagnie des Arts Français was the result of a partnership between architect Louis Süe and painter André Mare along with a cadre of other designers. The firm’s products ranged from furnishings to objects, like the faience vegetable dish that emerged from this design. Süe and Mare’s design reflects the creative fusion of the designers’ different backgrounds and suggests a parallel dialogue between historic, French style and a modern sensibility. The dish was exhibited at the 1925 Paris World’s Fair, called the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, from which the term "Art Deco" was coined.
