Drawing, Design for Musaphonic Clock Radio on Legs in Green
This is a Drawing. It was made for (as the client) General Electric Company. It is dated 1958 and we acquired it in 1992. Its medium is brush and gouache, brown watercolor, gray pastel, graphite on vellum. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Richard Arbib's imaginative radio designs reinterpret hallmark features of classic American automobiles. In this design for a clock radio, a chrome automotive grill becomes the radio speakers, while the enclosed tuning dial and clock at either side recall the form of headlights. With its molded body and metal accents, this clock radio offers luxurious automotive style at a price targeting mass market consumers.
It is credited Museum purchase through the gift of Mrs. Edward C. Post.
Its dimensions are
H x W: 42.2 × 48.6 cm (16 5/8 × 19 1/8 in.)
It is signed
Signed in brush and white gouache: Arbib 58
It is inscribed
Inscribed in graphite, lower left: 59; on design, speaker grill: GENERAL [GE symbol in red gouache] ELECTRIC; in yellow gouache, tuning dial: 5 6 7 8 9 10 12 14 16; in graphite, clock dial: SET ALAREM 60 [SLE]EP->0 OF[F] AUTO
