Sidewall, Design 105
This is a sidewall. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and manufactured by F. Schumacher & Co.. It is dated 1957 and we acquired it in 1991. Its medium is screenprinted on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
Design 105 was a later addition to the Taliesin Line named after Wright’s Wisconsin home first built in 1911. Wright believed that furnishings should be an integral part of the home and in 1955 designed this line of matching wallpapers and textiles for F. Schumacher and Co., along with a collection of furniture, affording homeowners the opportunity to create a unified interior. While Wright did not believe in disguising the inherent flat nature of the wall, he thought it was fine to ornament the wall with a flat pattern. This philosophy is reflected in the 2-dimensional nature of his wallpaper designs. It was recommended to use the wallpaper and matching fabric together to create unity, an interior design trend that had been revived a few years earlier. Many of Wright’s wallpaper and fabric designs were inspired by architectural plans and elevations.
