Surtout De Table (Table Centerpiece) (France)
This is a Surtout de Table (Table centerpiece). It was made by Pierre-Philippe Thomire. It is dated ca. 1810 and we acquired it in 1990. Its medium is cast and gilt bronze with hand engraving, cut glass, silvered-mirrored glass. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Firms such as that founded by Thomire in Paris produced a variety of elegant table decorations made of gilt bronze and cut glass. Patronage of these firms by heads of state, including Napoleon and the restored King Louis XVIII and Charles X, was accompanied by a growing market amongst the flourishing middle class in France ("A Royal Gift: The 1826 Porcelain Jewel Cabinet," May 17, 1994 - January 22, 1995).
