Architectural panels from the Western Methodist Book Concern Building, Chicago, Illinois (Harry B. Wheelock, architect) Architectural Panel

This is a Architectural panel. It was modeled by Kristian Schneider and manufactured by Northwestern Terra Cotta. It is dated ca. 1899 and we acquired it in 1991. Its medium is molded terracotta. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

These panels were part of the original decoration of the Western Methodist Book Concern Building in Chicago, completed in 1899. the buildling's architect was Harry Bergen Wheelock (1861-1934), a follower of the Chicago-style architect Louis Sullivan. Sullivan's influence is also evident in the ornament of the terracotta panels. The design of the panels, Kristian Schneider, provided detailing work for a number of Sullivan's buildling, including the Carson Pirie Scott Store finished in the same year.
